WJA Foundation, Real Gems Launch Scholarship in Dr. Shah Honor - scholarship
Dr. Shah, born in 1935 in Dhanera, India, was a physician who later co-founded Real Gems in New York in 1975 alongside his brother.

The Women’s Jewelry Association Foundation (WJAF) and Real Gems have launched a new scholarship named in honor of Dr. Rajnikant Shah, a figure long associated with the emerald trade. Announced on the first anniversary of his passing, the Dr. Rajnikant Shah Real Gems Memorial Scholarship provides $7,500 to individuals advancing their careers in the gem and jewelry sector. The fund represents a three-year commitment of $22,500 from Real Gems and will be awarded during the 2027 scholarship cycle.

Honoring a Legacy in the Trade

Dr. Shah, born in 1935 in Dhanera, India, was a physician who later co-founded Real Gems in New York in 1975 alongside his brother. He is credited with modernizing the emerald industry in Jaipur. His professional life extended beyond business; he served as the first Medical Superintendent of Santokba Durlabhji Hospital in Jaipur and was instrumental in founding the Indian Diamond Colorstone Association in 1986.

Colleagues described Dr. Shah as a pioneer in rough emerald sourcing. He traveled to Brazil every few weeks to select rough stones and build supplier relationships that remain active today. The scholarship aims to support the next generation by funding education and professional skill development. Funds may be used for courses, certifications, and workshops in areas like gemology, CAD/CAM, and lapidary arts.

Shekhar Shah, son of the late doctor and Principal of Real Gems, noted that his father wanted to leave an opportunity for future generations. “His life was defined by service, leadership, generosity, and a deep commitment to the advancement of not only our industry but also our craft,” Shekhar Shah said.

Beyond his work in the jewelry industry, Dr. Shah had a deep commitment to community service and his faith. He spearheaded the construction of the Jain Center of America Temple in Queens, New York, and established the Pasibai Revchand Shah Memorial Outpatient Block at Durlabhji Hospital in memory of his mother. He also donated a building to his alma mater, Subodh College, specifically for their MBA Program in honor of his late elder brother.
