The younger generation in the United Arab Emirates is adjusting their gold jewelry purchases, favoring lighter and more modern designs over the heavier styles once reserved for special occasions. This adjustment shows how cultural practices are blending with contemporary needs. Gold still holds strong cultural importance, appearing in weddings, gifts, and savings, but younger buyers are rethinking how it fits into everyday life.

New Consumer Priorities

Amreen Iqbal, founder of Dubai-based Piece of You, explains that today’s shoppers want jewelry they can incorporate into daily outfits, layer with other accessories, and wear flexibly. Millennials and Gen Z customers now see jewelry as part of their personal style rather than something worn only occasionally. Shamlal Ahamed, managing director at Malabar Gold & Diamonds, points out that minimalist designs are especially popular because they work for professional, casual, and formal settings alike.

This preference for lighter pieces and modern aesthetics lets younger buyers stay connected to gold traditions without sacrificing practicality or budget. Delicate chains, rings, and pendants are becoming more common as affordable ways to enter the gold market, particularly as prices climb.

Price Pressures Drive Smaller Purchases

Rising gold prices are leading consumers to focus on weight and cost efficiency. First-time buyers are increasingly drawn to smaller items, which provide gold ownership at a lower entry point. Demand for 18-karat gold has also increased because of its durability and suitability for daily wear. John Paul Alukkas, CEO of Joyalukkas Jewelry, states that younger customers now prioritize pieces that work for work, casual events, and weddings.

Chirag Vora of Bafleh Jewelry observes that higher prices encourage buyers to adopt a more cautious approach, choosing smaller items to control spending. This behavior reflects a deliberate balance between upholding tradition and managing financial decisions.

Traditional Uses Remain Strong

Heavy gold jewelry continues to hold importance for weddings, religious ceremonies, and other cultural milestones, such as celebrating first jobs. Yet the idea of what makes desirable gold jewelry is changing. Lighter, contemporary designs allow younger generations to participate in these traditions while keeping their individuality and financial flexibility intact. Gold’s value as both a financial asset and an emotional symbol remains, but its forms are adapting to fit modern living.
