Dubai’s jewelry designers are expanding their reach beyond local markets as high gold prices and rising costs strain the industry. A new initiative by the Dubai Gold Designers Business Group aims to convert local creativity into international sales, providing independent brands with a stronger platform to connect with buyers outside the emirate. The strategy, which combines professional training, commercial introductions, and strategic international appearances, seeks to reduce reliance on domestic demand while building sustainable export opportunities.

New Strategy for International Reach

Operating under the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, the group represents 50 members including designers, founders, and related creative businesses. Its three-pronged approach focuses on capability development, partnership building, and global visibility. Workshops and masterclasses will run alongside matchmaking sessions designed to connect members with retailers, distributors, and potential collaborators overseas. The emphasis is on generating qualified buyer introductions, export prospects, and lasting relationships rather than merely showcasing at events.

Success will be measured through buyer meetings, business leads, orders, partnerships, and improvements in members’ capabilities. The group is testing an International Representation Program over three years. The first year will establish participation rules and test collective representation. Year two aims to deepen buyer and international media relationships, while the third will assess business results, reputation, and options for continued funding. Membership criteria include suitable products, professional standards, regulatory compliance, and readiness to pursue commercial opportunities.

Balancing Craftsmanship and Cost

Global gold jewelry demand dropped to 278 metric tons, according to the World Gold Council, as high prices pressured purchasing decisions. For Dubai designers, this creates a delicate balance: maintaining craftsmanship and distinctive styling while convincing customers that a piece offers value beyond its metal content. The group’s strategy suggests that broader market access could help businesses diversify their customer base and reduce dependence on any single region.

The initiative builds on earlier engagements in Mumbai, Jaipur, Bangkok, Bahrain, and Florence. Chairwoman Maha Al Sibai has emphasized helping entrepreneurs access the knowledge, relationships, and platforms needed for sustainable growth. Dubai’s gold trade has grown significantly, rising from $43.4 billion in 2017 to $75 billion in 2021, according to the emirate’s Government Media Office. The chamber launched dedicated gold sector business groups in 2023 to strengthen industry representation and competitiveness.
