The ATHE Level 3 JET Certificate in the Foundations of Appraisal Practice is a 20-month course designed for aspiring valuers of jewellery, silverware, and watches. It serves as a prerequisite for joining the Institute of Registered Valuers (IRV) in the UK.
The program provides a detailed understanding of the IRV valuation methodology, including hands-on experience in conducting valuations. Students learn about the legal, ethical, and commercial aspects of running a valuation business.
Course Structure and Learning Outcomes
The course is divided into two modules, covering valuation theory and practice. Students attend a 3-day workshop focused on practical valuation techniques and complete seven written assignments. Upon finishing the course, graduates grasp the relationship between price, cost, and value, as well as market data approaches to valuation.
The curriculum also offers practical guidance on the valuation intake process and prepares students to conduct valuations independently. All participants qualify for free Student Membership of the IRV.

It’s worth noting that the course assessment consists of seven written assignments, with four assignments for Unit 1 and three for Unit 2, which are designed to challenge students and assess their understanding of the learning outcomes. Furthermore, the English Language level requirement of CEFR B1 can be demonstrated by an IELTS score of 4.0-5.0 for English as a Second Language.
The two online learning units provide students with a full understanding of the theory behind the basic approaches to determining value, how to research and interpret comparables, and the components of the written valuation. The course’s modular online learning programme is supported by Adviser-led assignment preparation tutorials, which help students develop and record the narrative to support the value conclusion determined.
The three-day practical valuation techniques workshop enables students to apply the theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, and the clear career pathway signposted by the course helps students handle their future in the industry. The ATHE Level 3 JET Certificate in the Foundations of Appraisal Practice is recognized by the Awards for Training and Higher Education (ATHE), and upon completion, graduates can view the pre-requisites to become an IRV member and work towards achieving Membership of the Institute of Registered Valuers (MIRV).
The course requires at least 5 GCSEs or ‘O’ Levels (or equivalent international qualifications), and students can benefit from the interactive online learning environment and the support of specialized advisers. The annual Awards Ceremony provides a chance for graduates to celebrate their achievement and receive their Certificate, and the IRV Mentor offers guidance and support in their continued journey towards MIRV.
